Bridges Under Pressure

Reliable structural solutions for aging infrastructure

Los Angeles relies on thousands of bridges—from private driveway access and HOA canyon crossings to municipal drainage overpasses. These structures hold up under vehicle loads, weather, and seismic movement every day. But even reinforced concrete and heavy timber have limits. When concrete begins to spall, wood members rot, or hillside erosion threatens the footings, it is not just a cosmetic problem. It is a structural failure in the making.

At Alpha Structural, we don’t just patch over the symptoms. As Los Angeles’ premier design-build structural experts, we engineer and execute repairs that restore the integrity of the bridge from the foundation up.

What Fails—and Why It Matters

Bridge damage often progresses slowly until it becomes critical. In Los Angeles, the primary culprits are usually water intrusion, slope movement, and time.

  • Concrete Spalling: When moisture penetrates concrete, it rusts the internal steel rebar. The rusting steel expands, cracking the concrete and causing it to flake off (spall), weakening the structure’s load-bearing capacity.
  • Foundation Settlement: Many bridges in LA span hillsides or drainage channels. If the slope erodes or the soil shifts, the bridge abutments (foundations) lose support, leading to sinking or separation.
  • Wood Rot & Termites: For timber bridges, moisture trapped at connection points leads to dry rot and termite damage, compromising the beams that carry the weight.

We don’t guess at the cause. We assess, test, and engineer a repair strategy that reinforces the specific weak points of your structure.

How Alpha Structural Repairs Bridges

We handle rehabilitation for private, commercial, and municipal bridges. Because we are licensed to both engineer and build, we create code-compliant solutions that solve the root issue without the friction of hiring separate firms.

Concrete Spalling & Structural Repair

Surface patches rarely last on a bridge that vibrates with traffic. We perform deep structural repairs. This involves chipping out damaged concrete, removing rust from the rebar (or replacing the steel entirely if the section loss is too great), and applying high-strength structural concrete or epoxy injections to restore the monolith. We stop the "concrete cancer" before it spreads to the rest of the deck or piers.

Foundation & Abutment Stabilization

A bridge is only as stable as the ground it sits on. If hillside erosion or soil creep has undermined the bridge footings, we deploy our hillside repair capabilities. We can stabilize bridge abutments using:

  • Underpinning: Deepening the foundation to reach competent soil or bedrock.
  • Caissons & Grade Beams: Installing friction piles or grade beams to arrest slope movement beneath the bridge approach.
  • Retaining Walls: Building structural walls to prevent soil from washing away from the bridge support zones.

Timber & Wood Bridge Repair

For wood-framed bridges, we remove and replace compromised structural members. This isn't a handyman fix; we shore up the bridge to ensure stability, remove rotted girders, posts, or decking, and install new, treated structural lumber using proper seismic hardware and connections to prevent future decay.

Seismic Retrofitting

Older bridges often lack the hardware required by modern codes to withstand an earthquake. We retrofit these structures with updated framing anchors, shear transfer mechanisms, and bolting systems to ensure the bridge stays seated on its foundation during seismic events.

Step-by-Step: The Design-Build Advantage

Most bridge repairs require engineering permits. Because Alpha Structural handles both the engineering and the construction in-house, we streamline the process.

  1. Assessment: We inspect the bridge for spalling, rotation, settlement, and material degradation.
  2. Engineering: Our in-house engineers design the repair, calculate loads, and produce plans for city/county approval.
  3. Permitting: We handle the submission and clearance with LADBS or local municipal agencies.
  4. Execution: Our own crews—not unknown subcontractors—perform the structural work.
  5. Validation: We ensure the repair meets the design intent and safety standards.

Why Alpha Structural?

We are not a general contractor guessing at engineering, nor are we a design firm that doesn't know how to build. We are a Design-Build structural powerhouse.

Our team has inspected over 15,000 properties and repaired over 5,000 structures across Southern California. We understand the specific geology of Los Angeles—from the clay soils of the hillsides to the coastal conditions of the Palisades. For bridge work, that means repairs that account for the soil, the slope, and the structure together.

Related Structural Capabilities

Bridges often require integrated site repairs. We also address:

  • Hillside Slope Repair: Stabilizing the canyon walls beneath a bridge.
  • Retaining Walls: protecting approach roads and abutments.
  • Drainage Systems: Diverting water away from bridge footings to prevent scour and erosion.
