Alpha Structural completed a rear patio and hardscape improvement project at this Pacific Palisades property. The work included expanding the existing rear patio by approximately 9 by 21 feet, creating new concrete walkways, and constructing an access ramp and landing to connect the garage area with the newly expanded patio.
The project included approximately 15 feet of concrete sidewalk extending from the front of the garage and another approximately 39 feet along the southern perimeter. A garden wall approximately 36 inches tall was also constructed, along with an additional concrete sidewalk and stair area measuring approximately 4 by 15 feet to provide access to the rear patio.
Foundation preparation included excavation for the garden wall and patio footings to approximately 24 inches deep and 18 inches wide. The sidewalk footing areas were excavated approximately 18 inches deep and 18 inches wide. Reinforcing steel was installed throughout the footings and concrete walkways, with epoxy-set rebar dowels connecting portions of the new construction to the existing foundation walls.
Drainage improvements were incorporated into the new hardscape system. A 4-inch PVC drain line was installed along the eastern and southern perimeters of the house and connected through a new curb core at the street. A 9-by-9-inch surface drain was installed in the new sidewalk, and an additional drainage connection was stubbed out to accommodate future rear-yard landscaping drainage.
Wood forms were constructed for the garden walls, ramp wall, landing walls, and crawlspace-access curb. The footings, garden wall, and patio walls were poured with 2,500 PSI concrete. After the forms were removed, the new patio cavity was backfilled and compacted in preparation for the finished concrete surfaces.
The new hardscape surfaces were then poured with 2,500 PSI concrete and finished with a brushed smooth surface. Together, the patio expansion, reinforced walkways, ramp, stairs, garden wall, and perimeter drainage created a more accessible and functional rear-yard hardscape system while providing infrastructure for future landscaping drainage.
