Alpha Structural completed the removal and replacement of approximately 75 linear feet of failing retaining wall along the property line. The new engineered retaining wall system incorporated deep pile foundations, a reinforced grade beam, high-strength concrete, waterproofing, and drainage improvements to provide long-term structural support and improved water management.
The project began with site preparation and demolition of the existing retaining wall and footings. Plants and planters were removed as necessary to provide access to the work area, followed by removal and hauling of the deteriorated wall and associated debris.
Four new pile foundations were excavated to approximately 13 feet deep. Reinforcing steel cages were installed within each pile according to the engineered design, and the piles were poured using a minimum 4,000 PSI high-strength concrete mix.
A new grade beam was then excavated along the retaining wall alignment. Reinforcing steel was installed to structurally connect the grade beam with the pile foundation system, and the beam was poured using a minimum 4,000 PSI concrete mix.
The new retaining wall was reinforced according to the engineered plans and constructed using a minimum 4,000 PSI concrete mix. Waterproofing membrane was applied to the back of the wall to provide additional protection against moisture and soil-side water exposure.
A new sub-drainage system was installed behind the retaining wall using filter fabric and a gravel bed. New drainage piping and a catch basin were incorporated into the system, with the drainage line extending to the street curb to provide a controlled outlet for collected water.
After the retaining wall and drainage components were completed, the area behind the wall was backfilled with compacted soil. A new reinforced concrete drainage swale approximately two feet wide was also formed and poured using 4,000 PSI concrete to help collect and redirect surface runoff.
Together, the deep pile foundations, reinforced grade beam, high-strength concrete retaining wall, waterproofing, sub-drainage, catch basin, compacted backfill, and concrete swale created a comprehensive replacement for the failing property-line retaining wall while improving drainage and water management around the structure.
